Head Instructor - Alex Lanyon
My name is Alex Lanyon. I'm the head instructor at Toa Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
I have studied martial arts since I was young and have trained and competed in many martial arts over the years. I started training Tae-Kwon-Do in my home town at the age of 8. In my teenager years I studied a number of different styles including various types of Karate and Boxing. After travelling for some time and moving to London I continued primariliy with a Style called Fujin White Crane (tiger crane combination) Kung Fu. I competed often and earned a number of gold medals under various rule sets in Great Britain and Europe. At this time my training also took me to China and Thailand.
In 2009 I began training MMA and became interested in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. In 2010 I switched my focus to the latter after falling in love with the mentality and technicality of BJJ. I trained hard, competing and earning gold medals at the Nationals, Pan Pacific championships, Asian International Championships, and Pan Asian Championships as well as some state level events.
I am a purple belt under Thiago Stefanutti, a 3rd Degree black belt and head Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu instructor at Absolute MMA).

He has excellent grappling skills and his style and approach to Judo really crosses over well to BJJ. He recently earned a silver and a bronze (weight and open weight) in the SA international open with a great performance. His ability to use pins, submission and throws will be a great asset to the club.

“It’s great to have the support of my coach Thiago. It gives me the chance to sharpen my own skills and bring better Jiu-Jitsu to the hills. It’s also great to have the backing of a strong team and a great family of athletes when we go interstate and abroad.”
